Boxwood: An Illustrated Encyclopedia Second Edition :
The proper identification of the great variety of boxwood can be challenging. Most widely available references usually describe, often with only several words, a dozen or so boxwood. Professionals are often confused by boxwood unknown to them and can be overwhelmed by taxonomic synonyms as well as misapplied common names and trademark designations.

A focused, 6-year examination by one of the world’s leading authorities on boxwood has resulted in this comprehensive and definitive second edition. It is designed to document plant characteristics and assist the specialist in the correct nomenclature and proper identification of all known cultivated boxwood. The author discusses 801 cultivars, 408 wild collected taxa, 56 selections from breeding programs, and 242 species and varieties for a total of 1,507 boxwood epithets. He has attempted to describe all the currently known boxwood with citations, descriptions, and 1,751 images. A typical cultivar entry includes its cultivar name, citation, mature size, cold hardiness, habit, description of the leaves and stems, annual growth, culture, pest and disease concerns, landscape use, genetic characteristics, origin, synonyms, and common names. If appropriate, additional information is included. Many boxwood entries have two, occasionally more, images to assist in the proper identification of distinguishing characteristics.

The author, Lynn R. Batdorf has served as the International Registrar for Buxus since 1985. He was curator of the National Boxwood Collection at the US National Arboretum in Washington DC from 1977 to 2013.

This 8½ X 11 inch hardback book has 668 pages. The intended users are curators, horticulturists, professional and public gardeners, landscape designers, professional enthusiasts, and those in the commercial nursery industry.
